T.W. Birks & Son of Holmfirth were the first company in the country to take delivery of Mark 11 Ford Fairlane vehicles from Westhoughton based coachbuilder Coleman Milne.
T.W. Birks & Son are longstanding customers of Coleman Milne having originally bought their first vehicle in 1970, a Ford Dorchester Limousine, when the average cost of a Funeral was just ᆪ114. The company was originally started by Thomas Wilfred Birks and has spanned over four generations notching up a number of ‘firsts’ along the way including being the first company in Huddersfield to have their own Chapel of Rest, as well as being the first Funeral Directors in the area to have on-site refrigeration storage facilities. The business is currently run by the great grandchildren of the founder; Neil, Alastair, Ian & Fiona.
Coleman Milne Sales & Marketing Director Geoff Hudson continues, ‘We have a long-established relationship with T.W. Birks & Son and it is quite remarkable really that they continue being first as they were also the first customers to take delivery of the Mark 10 Ford range as well as the facelift models in between. We would like to take this opportunity to wish them continued success and view the latest additions to their fleet as the ideal way to ensuring their presence at the forefront of the industry.’

This month see’s the release of the new, improved Coleman Milne Sure-Lift. The sure Lift can be installed into a variety of vehicles including the Mercedes Vito, the VW T5 Transporter and Vauxhall Vivaro.
Hydraulic cylinder lifts are replaced with electric four corner lifting mechanisms. The linear actuators make lift operations quieter. The twin decks are now finished with a new advanced material that is lighter, more durable, stronger and scratch resistant. It now also has storage for four stretchers.
The lift system is operated by controls that are mounted on the rear door or pillar. This can only be operated when the rear doors are open and the side door is closed, again this is built with maximum safety in mind. The new vehicle has ‘Magic eye detectors’ that ensure lift operation stops if the laser line on the lower deck is broken. Both of the new decks have 12 rollers, four adjustable coffin stops, folding bumper covers with slam lock action. At the rear of the vehicle warning lights are activated when the doors are open making it safe and discreet to use at all times.
Coleman Milne are seeing a huge demand for the vehicle that was launched earlier this month. ‘The Sure lift has evolved into an extremely smooth operator using the latest electronic technology, customers are really seeing the benefits of this new vehicle’ comments Area sales manager Graham Clow.

During a hectic 3 days on the Coleman Milne stand at the National Funeral Exhibition our pictures show Southern Area Sales Manager Peter Potter & Mrs Sue Saville, President of The National Association of Funeral Directors viewing the new Coleman Milne Fairlane Mark 11 range of Funeral Vehicles.
Peter Potter recalls, ‘As a user of Coleman Milne products herself, Sue came across to have a look at the new Model of Ford Fairlane and it was really good to get her feedback as it was with all visitors to the stand. We have put a lot into the development of these two vehicles and to get to take in the opinions and see the reactions of our target audience first hand was an invaluable experience’.

In addition to the much talked-about launch of the new CM Fairlane range there was one area of the Coleman Milne stand that was remarkably busy throughout the recent, three day National Funeral Exhibition at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire and that was around the CM Mondeo Removal vehicle.
The Mondeo removal vehicle was launched towards the end of 2008 and has sold steadily since it was introduced to the market place with many Funeral Directors citing the build quality, understated functionality, and professional appearance make the Mondeo the perfect addition to their fleet.
Group Sales & Marketing Director Geoff Hudson quotes, “the Mondeo Removal vehicle was a great success at Stoneleigh. We had a large number of Funeral Directors who looked at the car for the first time who commented on both the quality and functionality of the folding deck area. As a result of the show we have had a number of enquiries regarding the vehicle and look forward to providing a sustained number to new and existing customers over the next few months”.
The Coleman Milne Removal vehicle offers a high quality veneer deck which will accommodate a coffin over six foot or a Ferno type 24 style stretcher. The folding removable deck will also accommodate coffin stops and fittings for one or two coffins or stretchers and has an innovative quick release system for removal or access to the spare wheel. This vehicle also offers a number of seating options and when the deck is in use can offer unrivalled leg room for the driver.
